The Proper Diet Of Labrador Puppies April 13th, 2010

Some Labrador feeding tips

Labrador puppy feeding

Before we get to what you should be feeding and how much, here’s some common guidelines when it comes to feeding a Labrador puppy.

Never let you Labrador puppy get too heavy during the growth stages. They should have a thin layer of fat, but you should still be able to feel their ribs easily.

No forced exercise, jogging (especially on hard surfaces), jumping, field training or agility work, until the dogs are at least 18 months old and their bones are set.

When dealing with large breeds, They really are puppies until at least 18 months of age. I know it doesn’t seem like it, but they are actually quite fragile and need supervised exercise in a fenced in area and daily walks with you.

For strong bones they need normal moderate exercise. The generally accepted rule is that they can do about 5 minutes of walking per month of life. For instance, a 3 months old Lab puppy could go for a 15 minute walk.

Never leave food down all the time. Some dogs will only eat what they need, but very few Labradors will stop eating until all the food is finished. It is also a dominance issue – Dogs with free access to food are much more likely to decide that they are the alpha. It will make your life harder.

Don’t give your dog any calcium, vitamin or mineral supplements. If you are feeding a premium dog food, you most likely do not need to add supplements, and doing so can throw off the balance of the food preventing proper absorption of some minerals or vitamins. Only give supplements if your vet tells you to.

Be careful about the amount of “treats” you give your Labrador retriever. The calories does add up. Break Dog biscuits into smaller pieces or use tiny pieces of carrots and apples as treats. This should not disrupt the balance of the diet or add a lot of calories to the diet. If you do feed treats, adjust the puppies next meal to allow for it.

When you feed, make sure that it is in a non stressful environment. If possible, try feeding in a crate as it reinforces that the crate is a good place to be.

When you give them their food, measure out the correct amount (We’ll get to that) and put it down for them. Allow 10 minutes, and after that take the food away. If they ate most of it, you’re fine. If they didn’t eat a lot, try again in 60 minutes and keep doing this until they eat most of the food in one go.

If they keep just eating a little bit at a time, take it away for 2 hours before trying again. You basically want to teach them that they eat when you give them food, and if they don’t, they’ll stay hungry until you decide to give it to them again.

What to feed

Personally, I’d rather see a thin puppy during growth than a fat one. For a healthy Labrador puppy, you need a moderate protein/fat/calorie food. There is a myth that high protein/fat/calorie food will result in a bigger dog. This is simply not true. The only likely effect it will have is to cause your puppy to develop nutritionally caused bone diseases.

Never feed any food with a fat content above 15% as this promotes accelerated growth. In large breeds, accelerated growth is likely to cause growth deformities and early arthritis. You should also not feed low protein or fat food as they are not high enough in calories.

It is generally a good idea to feed the breeder’s recommended puppy food until the puppy reaches its adult weight. For female Labrador Retrievers, that happens at about 11-12 months old, and for males somewhere between 14 and 18 months old.

If you want to switch to a different puppy food, make sure that you switch the food slowly over the period of about a week. Over the course of a week, mix the old and new food together, slowly increasing the amount of the new food until after a week you are feeding the new food. Don’t be surprised if your puppy has an upset stomach during this period.

After this you can switch to an adult (maintenance) food for the rest of your puppies life. Try to stay on a food that has no more than 26% protein and 15% fat at least until the dog is 18 months of age. You should never feed a ‘Performance’ dog food to a puppy as it can cause all kinds of problems later in life!

A word about water

Always keep lots of fresh water available so the animal knows there is water around, and is less apt to over-consume. Some people will withhold water to try and make it easier to house break a puppy. This is not only cruel, but also totally ignorant. Puppies will naturally tend to gorge when they drink since they haven’t figured out how to tell when they’ve had enough. By denying water, you reinforce this habit which could lead to bladder infections, potential dehydration and painful muscle cramping.

Use common sense, and do not let your Labrador puppy drink excessively (Especially after exercise or dinner). If you always have water available, they tend to drink smaller amounts more frequently as they know that water is available when they need it.

How much should I feed my Labrador puppy?

This is unfortunately not an easy question to answer. There are many reasons for this, but the main reasons is the fact that it depends on your puppies metabolism and activity levels.

You should look at the feeding chart on your dog food’s bag and use that as a base to determine how much you should feed. Then use the information in the next section to keep an eye on your puppies weight and adjust the amount you feed based on this.

How much should my puppy weigh?

Once again, there is no clear answer. Adult Labradors will weigh anywhere between about 40 and 100 pounds. Because of this, you can’t say with any certainty how much they should weigh at a certain age, but a rule of thumb, between the age of 10 weeks and 10 months, the puppy should weigh about 2 pounds (1 Kilogram) for each week of their age.

So a 16 week old puppy should weigh about 32 pounds (or 16 Kilograms). Females might be up to a pound (half a kilogram) lighter and males up to 1 pound heavier.

This formula is only a guideline though – Nothing can replace having a good look at your puppy to see if it is carrying too much weight. A good way to check is that you shouldn’t be able to feel any ribs if you run your fingers over your puppies coat, but if you put a small amount of pressure, you should be able to feel them.

Likewise, the ribs should just be visible if they are standing in bright sunlight, but hard to make out if they are in the shadow.

You should evaluate the amount you feed your puppy about once a week based on the above observations. For example, if the ribs are becoming too defined, add 1oz (25g) of food to the normal amount and re-evaluate after a week.

What if my Labrador puppy is getting too fat?

If you see that it’s become difficult to feel the puppies ribs, decrease their food by about 1oz (25g) and feed them that amount for the next week. If they are still picking up weight, decrease it again. If they are losing a small amount of weight or staying the same, just feed the same amount for the next week and then re-evaluate.

Don’t give in to the temptation to put your Labrador puppy on a lite diet. They need the nutrients for their developing organs and brain cells and their coats will suffer drastically. Until they have finished growing, they need to be getting puppy food.

If you do need to cut back on the amount of food, you can add some (sodium-free) canned green beans to each meal. This will still fill the puppy up which keeps him happy, but without adding a lot of extra calories to the diet.

I hope this answers all your Labrador feeding questions. If there’s anything I missed, feel free to ask in the comments.

Hi we have just got a Labrador puppy he is 15 weeks old we have had him a week, the breeder we got him off told us to feed him twice a day with half dry and wet, not sure if this is OK as he seems hungry in between.        Also if the tin wet food says 500g  and the dry food says 115g over 4 meals do I half those amounts?     Thankyou     Brenda Cresswell

We have a 16 week old labby and we give her 1 to 2 cups of dry food in the morning and a cup of puppy milk and then a third of a roll of puppy luncheon for dinner. I find the measurements on the labels difficult as I think it is too much.

Hi,  I've just got an 12 week old yellow lab.  The guy person I got him from was giving him Science Diet IDEAL BALANCE.  I've just continued to give him the same, 4 to 5 times a day.  I had no idea the feeding for a puppy was so complex.  I'm glad I came across your page.  I was concerned that I was feeding him too much.  Now I'm worried I'm giving him the wrong diet.  I saw an earlier post where the owner was giving his dog "people" food.  Now I'm confused.  Should I stick to the dry food or add people food to his diet?

Thanks.  And your page is very informative.

How do you know when your puppy is too thin? I feel my lab is really thin. He's 6 months old 28 lbs. Is that too little? He eats a lot and still seems thin :/

Hi, I have a female lab who's nearly 5 months old and weighs about 13kg.  I am undecided what is best to feed her.  She gets premium dry and wet food (enough of both together to make a fist size) twice a day.  Is this enough? too much? or should I be spreading it out into 4 feeds.  She gets 2 X 30 min walks a day (morning and night) shes not flabby or fat but I want to make sure Im doing the right thing. Thanks, Alena

My pet Lab is about two months old his weight is about 2.9 k.g he is very lazy . I am giving him feed three times a day . He always sleeps does not want to go for walk, not interested in playing  also. what should be done?

    Deep
  • Deep Bhatia
Thanks for the  advice . Now he has started  playing a littel bit but does like atall to be chained and taken to walk although he follows me for very short distance if not chained  .
  • RiaanCornelius
I would suggest you take him to a vet if he does not want to play at all, since 2 month old lab puppies will be quite active for little periods at a time. Usually they will sleep for an hour or two and then be very active and playful for 5-15 minutes before they get tired and go back to sleep again.

At this age, you shouldn't take him for walks longer than 5 - 10 minutes, and make sure it is always on soft surfaces like grass, never on pavements or roads, as his joints is still developing and walking on hard surfaces could cause joint problems when he gets older.

My husband got me a black lab puppy today and we are unsure of how old he is. He is 8.5 pounds and looks healthy body wise. Any suggestions on how old he might be? Also, I have never had a large breed dog so I don't really know how/what/when/how much to feed him. The girl that we got him from said she fed him twice a day, but from what I have read, I need to feed him more. Is this right? Also, he is breathing really fast and sleeping more than I think he should be. Is the breathing fast normal? Its freaking me out! Please help as I am obviously clueless!

Our 3-month old lab/Australian shepherd mix puppy has develped diarrhea.  We feed him Purina puppy chow plus milk bone biscuits for a treat.  He looks good -- is neither fat nor skinny, but the last 3 days he is having watery stools.  He has been nipping my day lilies as well as other things he finds on the ground when we take him out of his kennel.  He is curious about everything and nips at things.  What can we do do get him over his loose stools?

For a dog that young, I would suggest rather talking to your vet about what to feed them. At that stage he won't be weaned yet. If you feed him the wrong things now, you could do permanent damage.

hey hi,,,,,,my lab was also bites everything when he was small....but lots of exercise in a day(around 45 min of of walking)is necessary for a dog.........so try to tired him by walking or any other activity..........pup stops biting everything........

ok, then i understand your problem and that is too difficult to handle a puppy. Thats better for u to sell that ok ....  bye.
    lol
    i like ur good puppy.
  • RiaanCornelius
Puppies at that age will sleep a lot but when they are awake, they'll want to play. This is perfectly normal. First, don't encourage him to jump, as that can affect the development of his joints and cause joint related problems later. I wouldn't worry to much if he jumps on his own, but when you play with him, only roll toys, don't throw stuff for him, and keep your hands close to the ground for him to focus on.

For the biting, just follow this instructions in this blog post and be consistent. It might take a week or two to see real improvements if he's gotten into the habit of biting.

The fact that he's not drinking water is probably just because he gets enough liquids from the milk. As long as you make sure he always has water available, I wouldn't worry about that.

The four meals a day is good, but at 2 months old, his mother would be weaning him off the milk at the moment, so I would do the same. To start with I would heat the milk a bit and start mixing in a bit of dry kibble. Start of with making about one fifth of his meal kibble for 2 days or so, and then increase the kibble to 2 fifths, etc, until you are feeding him only kibble. Keep an eye on him during this time as he should start drinking more water, and he might have a runny tummy while he gets used to the new food.

thank you for your reply :)

i'll see to it that he doesn't jumps much and finally he has started drinking water.
he is really very active these days. as suggested by a vet we have started giving him royal canines and milk and 2 chapatis a day.
the vet also said that my puppy is very active as compared to other puppies of his age.

    thanking yu :)

what all dogs really need is at least half, if not all of their diet fresh, raw meat. thats what dog's are meant to eat and trust me they thrive on it! some good quality processed foods (tin food or dry kibble) are ok, but aren't very healthy and actually promote allergies --- like constant scratching of skin. my lab puppy is 5 mnths old, has puppy kibble in the morning and fresh meat and chicken necks at night. he also has fresh offcuts of bones from the butcher to chew during the day. he's perfect weight and his coat is beautiful and shiny. he's full of energy and loves to chew on the bones.

i recommend all owners have their dogs on this type of diet. it is actually cheaper than quality commercial foods, better for your dog and a whole lot more natural!

    Hello RiaanCornelius,

I have a 45 days Labrodor(male) puppy. I got him when he was 36 days old. The breeder told me that he is on Royal Canine Starters food and I should just keep him on the same food, which I am doing right now. I give him 4 meals- 20 gms each, with 4 hours difference between each meal. I started adding around 5 gms of half cooked tiny carrot pieces and peas. Plus I started using yoghurt with lukewarm water to add to the meal instead of water. Do you think I am feeding him right?

The breeder also told me not to give him water until he is 4 months old. But he is mad about water when he sees it. Was the breeder correct?

last thing is that he is very playful. He jumps and run around a lot. I sometime try to just keep him away from doing that as I read that they should not do much physical activity as their bones are tender at this age. Do you suggest I just have him sleep/sit most of the day and play with him for 15-20 mins only.

Forgive me for so many questions but I am kinda confused :(

    Thanks - Nagender

Ideally your puppy should have meal 5 times a day with variation of minerals, protein, carbohydrate, fat. In the morning try to five him egg white ( 2 eggs ). after 2 hrs give him 3 spoon cerelak & 1 spoon milkopet mixed with water.  for lunch give him 5 spoon rice and 25 gram smashed chicken liver ( cooked). In the evening feed him 20 grms of the dog food. At night prefer to stick to cooked pieces of vegetables, chickpeas and soyabean cumulitively accounting to 1 cup. Always keep water available so taht it can drink whenever needed. Regarding being playful..let it be its self. don't force him to sleep or . It knows it best..but dont put it on any training as of now or dont overdo the exercise and dont excite it too much as dogs are prone to stroke. Let it play on its self as m,uch as he wants

Hi, I hope I receive a reply since you haven't updated ur blog since April.

I have a golden-yellow 5-6months old labrador retriever. The issue is, he has stopped taking milk to chapattis for the past 7 days (I used to feed him 3-4 chapattis thrice). He eats papita and boiled eggs only. Apart from that he is very active and his stool is normal. I dont want to feed him meat.

Hi my Puppy labrador is 3.5 months old .
I am giving him Puppy pedigree + butter milk + oats
    Is that diet is right
    Please advice.
  • RiaanCornelius
    Hi,

At 3,5 months his mother would have weaned him off of milk already, so
dairy products would generally be a bad idea. I would definately replace
the buttermilk with water. Regarding the oats, I wouldn't give a lot of
oats as that doesn't have a lot of nutritional value, but it would fill
him up, so he might think he is full when he hasn't actually had enough
food (That's not generally a problem with Labradors though..). Pedigree
also has quite a bit of fiber already, so he shouldn't really need more.

Regarding the pedigree, at the very least make sure that you are giving
him the food for a large breed puppy. If you don't he won't get enough
Calcium and might have joint problems when he gets older.

I wrote a hub on feeding puppies that you can see here:
    http://hubpages.com/hub/Everyt...

If you are at all unsure about what and how much to feed, I would
    suggest talking to your vet.

Hi- I just started taking my 4.5 month old (male) lab off of Pedigree and switched him to Merrick dog food. I did the switch too fast, probably in 3 days worth of time so he is experiencing some diarrhea. Should I just keep him on the Merrick now? Will the diarrhea eventually go away? Thank you.

i have a 4 week oold pup and he jus all of a sudden his stomach is hard and big i check his poop and there nothing there he plays and runs and always sleeping is there something wrong ?
  • RiaanCornelius
It is possible that he could have eaten something that is stuck in his
stomach or intestines. Check for any tenderness when you put gentle pressure
on his stomach. If he whines when you touch his stomach, you need to get him
to a vet as soon as possible. It can get incredibly painful and dangerous
    very quickly.

Also keep in mind that young puppies will eat and drink until their stomachs
are completely full. Check him just before you feed him and make sure that
his stomach isn't hard and full. If it isn't, you probably just checked
after he ate or drank water. Also make sure that you are feeding him the
    right amounts.

If there is the slightest bit of doubt that he is OK though, you should
rather get him to a vet. Puppies that young are quite fragile and you don't
    want to take a chance.

    hi....
my dog is about 1 n 1/2 mounth old can i give him pedeegry 2 eat?????
  • RiaanCornelius
His mother would be weaning him off of milk at this stage, so you could start giving solid food, but you would have to make sure that you phase it in over the course of a week or so, if you just switch over immediately, he will have diarrhea and an upset stomach. I wrote a hub on feeding puppies that you can see here:

I would suggest talking to your vet about what and how much to feed though as he is still very young and you can do a lot of long term damage by getting it wrong. The most important thing is to make sure that you are going to be feeding large breed puppy food.

my puppy is 47 days old
i m feedin him cerelak 4 times a day is that good for him ???
if not ? so wat should i do??
  • RiaanCornelius
4 times a day is about right for that age, but his mother would be weaning him off of milk at this stage. I wrote a hub on feeding puppies that you can see here:

You should probably start giving him some solid puppy food as well, but if you are at all unsure about what and how much to feed, I would suggest talking to your vet.

I have a new labrador puppy, but due to committments can only feed the puppy twice during the day. (8.00am & 6.00pm) Could this be harmful to the puppy.
  • RiaanCornelius
It would depend on how old they are. If they are older than about 3-4
months, you shouldn't have any problems as long as you can wean them off it
for a couple of days. Maybe just feed him less for lunch every day for a
week until he gets no lunch.

The more important aspect here is that puppies need the interaction with
other people or dogs. If he is alone for the full day, you might have
behavioral issues. He will chew everything and find the most amazing ways to
keep himself busy if he gets bored. If at all possible, I would suggest
trying to find somebody to spend at least 30 - 45 minutes with him in the
middle of the day, and make sure that he has enough safe toys that he can
    play with unattended.

hi, My puppy is one month old, currently i am feeding cerelak to her and milk as well.

my question is as my puupy is still one month old how times should i feed her the cerelak and milk also.
  • RiaanCornelius
    Hi Paramesh,

A puppy really should not leave it's mother until at least 6 weeks old and
preferably not before 7-8 weeks. If at all possible I would suggest getting
the puppy back to his mother and leaving it with her for a bit longer.

If this is not possibly, I would suggest you take it to your vet and ask
him. It is very dependent on the puppies weight and overall condition, and
you can do a lot of damage by getting it wrong. You would need to feed it at
least 4-6 times a day, and not a lot at those times, since it has a tiny
stomach at this stage. The mother would usually start weaning puppies off
milk at somewhere around 6 weeks old, at which stage you should probably
start feeding it some puppy food soaked in water and mashed up, but once
again, I can't say how much.

You really need to talk to your vet about this. If you feed a Labrador puppy
incorrectly at this young age, you could cause joint and hip problems later
    in it's life.

    Regards
    Riaan
